commonalities of female printers
Although few in numbers compared to their male counterparts, women have been involved in printing and publishing works since the invention of the printing press. "Women at all levels of the press helped shape literary tastes, cultural habits, structures of feeling, and public opinion (Jones, 2000, pp. 135). Using the women detailed here as representative of all women involved in printing/publishing throughout history, it becomes clear that entering the field through men, having a good eduction, and being from a middle- or upper-class background has played an important role in allowing women to contribute to society in this manner.
commonalities of female writers
As with printing, women have been involved in the process of writing and having their works published since the very beginning. However, unlike printing, writing has not been as limited to women with a formal education or from middle- or upper-class backgrounds. Further, women have had to rely on men less often to write or have their works published than what has been required for women to enter the field of printing/publishing.
